Executive Summary The human genome consists of approximately 2.8 x10 9 nucleotide base pairs which may encode up to 25,000 genes. However not all of these genes are " turned " on, with only a subset being expressed at any one time. Not only can gene expression be turned on and off in response to stimuli, the amount or volume of gene expression can either be up or down regulated. The degree of gene expression may give previous unknown insights into the course of disease, and may guide treatment strategies. DNA microarrays are a relatively new technology, which were first described in 1995. Small fragments of DNA, or oligonucleotides, are attached to a glass substrate by a variety of manufacturing processes. DNA microarrays may hold 100,000s of these elements. Complementary DNA from test and reference samples are labelled with a visualisation tag such as a fluorophore and hybridised to the microarray. The intensity of the signal of the bound DNA is an indication of a given gene's activity. Active genes will give a more intense, brighter signal than less active genes. …

documents a continuing activity by HealthPACT in Horizon Scanning for Health Technology. At the February meeting 25 emerging technologies were discussed and considered and the newsletter covers a selection of these including point of care testing for influenza, renal transplantation using incompatible blood group donors and a number of other interesting and emerging technologies. A number of in...

The role of surgeons in identifying emerging technologies for health technology assessment.

BACKGROUND Health technology assessment (HTA) is a tool intended to help policy-makers decide which technologies to fund. However, given the proliferation of new technologies, it is not possible to undertake an HTA of each one before it becomes funded. Consequently, "horizon-scanning" processes have been developed to identify emerging technologies that are likely to have a substantial impact on...

The application of DNA microarrays in gene expression analysis.

DNA microarray technology is a new and powerful technology that will substantially increase the speed of molecular biological research. This paper gives a survey of DNA microarray technology and its use in gene expression studies. The technical aspects and their potential improvements are discussed. These comprise array manufacturing and design, array hybridisation, scanning, and data handling....

Evaluation criteria to assess the value of identification sources for horizon scanning.

OBJECTIVES The English National Horizon Scanning Centre routinely scans thirty-five sources to identify new and emerging health technologies. The aim of the study was to develop and apply evaluation criteria and scores to assess the value of sources, and to identify a cutoff score below which sources would be recommended for removal from routine horizon scanning. Criteria to evaluate each sourc...

Microarray technology in obstetrics and gynecology: a guide for clinicians.

Microarrays can be constructed with dozens to millions of probes on their surface to allow high-throughput analyses of many biologic processes to be performed simultaneously on the same sample. Microarrays are now widely used for gene expression analysis, deoxyribonucleic acid resequencing, single-nucleotide polymorphism genotyping, and comparative genomic hybridization. Microarray technology i...
